Small Town Christmas Fun

image

No, it’s not a float but doesn’t it look like it could be? This is some hearty soul’s house and I wish he lived next door to me. I don’t have one light hung, no tree, well, it’s leaned against the shed out back being hosed down with water as I write. (Gets rid of dead needles and spider hitch-hikers who FREAK me out when I reach into the tree and they reach back.) Shudder.

Back to floats…….Tonight we’ll be seeing lots of them and some will probably look like this. Downtown Clovis always has an electric light parade the first weekend in December and we try never to miss it because it’s so homespun. There’ll be semi-trucks, Jeeps, horses, marching bands, decorated dogs, and kids wrapped up like presents.

Usually a few friends join us and we huddle up and drink hot chocolate or Starbucks and munch cookies and popcorn while we talk about how we’re freezing. However, this is California – low level elevation California. Freezing is relative. It’ll probably be clear down in the 40’s for those of you in snow country who would probably be in swimsuits here. But we’ll shiver anyway and bring blankets and coats and love every minute of it. And I’m breaking with tradition and making iced cranberry and orange scones. For the moms. And LOTS of friends are coming this year so it should be a blast. All I can say is…..

Wish YOU were here!

Oh yeah, and I also wish Santa would visit while I’m gone tonight and decorate my house but not before cleaning it and doing all my laundry. Why can’t a girl get what she REALLY wants?

  1. Oh Robynn, I wish I could be a Christmas elf at your house while you were gone, but alas, even though we are in the same time zone, it's a bit too far to go. Plus we are going to a party up in BC tonight. Anyway, I look forward to pictures of tonight's floats. Reminds me that I simply MUST get up to the gingerbread house display soon!

  3. When you figure out how to get Santa to clean and decorate, let me know. I'd pay a lot for that service.

  4. Oh I so wish I could be there with ya. Well I could, considering we live only a few minutes away. But I wouldn't be good company. I would be the one blowing my nose and coughing up a lung and whining all night long about being way too cold, wait way too hot, no too cold ... well you get the idea. Yes I have a cold. I am not fun right now. I usually delight in all the Christmas festivities and decorating. Well, there's always tomorrow!

  5. Sounds like fun!
All my international students are going back to their respective countries for the Christmas break, and I don't plan to decorate for myself! So, I'll just enjoy me some quiet time! :-)

  8. I love seeing the Christmas lights. I also enjoy doing a lot of decorating but this year I will only be looking. For the first time in over twenty years I won't be up on the roof getting the lights up and going.

I'll be driving around and enjoying other folks homes though and getting ideas for the next time I have some place to decorate.

  10. Robynn...You are so much fun to read! I love being here.
The photo looks like a Christmas card....
And....I'm with the majority of your commenter's here on this one: If Santa cleans your house, make sure that you leave him MY address, too.
Thank you for a lovely blog.
    Smiles,

  11. I love Christmas so very much. But I won't let the excitement engulf me until December starts. Your photo is terrific but heven's know what their electricity bill is!

Enjoy your self tonight, you deserve it. X

  12. AMEN! I need a house cleaning santa too... My laundry is so backed up my husband went and bought two new pairs of jeans today. He claims its just because he wanted some, but I'm pretty sure it's actually because his wife is a terrible person who doesn't like to do laundry, and isn't very good at it. On a happy note tho, I got hooks screwed into my eves this week so in the future christmas lights will be a piece of cake to hang! Of course, I had plenty lights to hang on them, but I also had a pile of lights that needed to be thrown out. I of course, got my piles mixed up, and threw out the good ones, and kept the bad ones. Back to the store I go. Ya just gotta laugh sometimes. I hope I never have to climb an 18 foot extension ladder with a drill in hand again, that's all I'm gonna say. Parades are fun! Hope you had a blast!

  16. Anything "homespun" is not to be missed! It sounds like a fun evening and 40 is definitely on the chilly side... but yes it was 8 last night thankfully above zero but ugh it felt downright cold! You are a woman after my own heart!! A clean house and would be oh so nice to get for a present :)

  17. Well if I do the Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion for you my husband is at our cabin riding snow mobiles and the temperature is 5 degrees F. That is minus 15 C.
    And he is having fun.
Me on the other hand. I am about to go put some socks on my cold toes because the house heated to 69 F. isn't warm enough.
What I really need is one of those scones to go with my coffee. Sounds good.

  21. That is a cool house! And to think some people get upset when someone decorates to the hilt!

Thanks for the parade and the photos you took. They also are great!
