Lovers’ Leap

Grizzly and I had a chance to get away a few weeks ago. We don’t do this very often. Our kids were seven and eleven the first time we went out of town without them. We didn’t repeat it until last year. I don’t know if that makes us pathetic paramours, conscientious homeschooling parents (who can never see or do anything without commenting “Wouldn’t the kids love this?”), or simply lazy, but I’m pretty sure it’s all three.

However, last year we took the leap, left the kids here – kids who couldn’t have been happier to wave good-bye to us – and went to Cambria, on the central coast of California. Lovely. Refreshing. Full of reminders of why, after 23 years, we have consistently refrained from killing each other when it truly seemed the only logical answer more than once. We vowed to repeat these getaways more often, even if only for a night out. We didn’t. Life happened. The economy happened.

Then Bo stepped in. Bo, my college girl. For our birthdays, she bought us two nights in the little Cambria cabin we love. And then she told us to go away. And she made reservations for us so we couldn't weenie out.

Grizzly insisted he support my blog by buying a decent camera. He also thinks my blog needs an airplane, flying lessons, an extended trip to Hawaii, and three years on sabbatical. We traded off shooting photos, hence my shot of our feet. This is proof he had his chance to live peacefully ever after – I’m positioned in front of him – but he demurred. By the way, this is the best picture I have ever appeared in. From now on, when asked to be part of a group photo, I will stand out of the frame and simply insert my foot. I have thin feet and ankles. That’s where all thinness ends.

Now look at Grizzly’s work. He has an eye for beauty and I may be biased, but the man has talent. I’m wondering what he could do with a camera AND an airplane. In Hawaii. He comes alive with nature as his subject. One of his first jobs as a teen was delivering flowers and he likes to photograph them.

No trip is complete until you get to know the locals. These are friends we made.

Some treasure we found.

The photographer. I found this treasure years ago. It has grown immensely in value. But it is privately owned and will never be traded on the open market.

  1. Absolutely wonderful ... I'm so happy for you two. What a neat 'kid' you have, but that doesn't surprise me at all. The photos are beautiful and Grizzly looks like a real sweetheart! Oh ... BTW, I don't even have skinny feet, fingers, ear lobes ... nothing!!!

  4. How wonderful! It looks like you two had a fantastic time - and that smiling photo of Grizzly kind of adds the frosting to the top of the cake, eh?

And the foot pic? Worthy of framing, in my humble opinion. ;-)

  5. I absolutely love the feet photo, but they are all exceptional. You must have taken the last one, huh? How wonderful to have a partner (and children) like you have! I'm pretty lucky with my guy too, but he doesn't take pictures. I think you should get him an airplane. Who knows what might happen?? :-)

  7. Hi! Thanks for your comment on my blog... or the lumberjack's comment. :-) Grin... Sounds like you guys raised two wonderful kiddos. :-) Frank did not cease reading your blog. He got tired of Frank Castle, so cancelled that name and switched to Gearhed79--and has not signed up for following anyone due to the crazy schedule of ours lately. Once I'm back to being my normal self in my normal house, I will commence with regular readership of the blogs I love--it's killing me to do all this boring housekeeping stuff. So glad you guys got time away!!!

  13. Nice pictures. I have never gone on a parents only vacation, either. And now my dearly beloved doesn't want to go on any vacation, saying, "I have a nice house. I like my house. Why would I want to leave it? If I didn't like it, I would move." Guess that vacation's not coming real soon.

How is Bo's cat faring without her?

  14. Love those husband wife getaways. The Hubby has a voucher for a free airline ticket so we are planning a trip to San Francisco in the near future. Having a husband that travels has done wonders for our getaway opportuinties. I had an impromptu trip to Perto Rico last December to join him for a weekend when he was there on business and the whole trip was nearly free, with hotel points and Frequent flyer miles!!! It was wonderful!!!

Glad you had a good time!

  20. What a sweet Bo to reserve you a weekend getaway, and what a smart Bo to make you go!

Loved all the pics--each so pretty. I like the 2nd flower photo--of the green leaves and are those water droplets? I would have like to have seen a larger version of that one!

The foot picture is unusual and intriguing! A winner for sure.

You have a handsome husband--a real keeper for sure!

  29. That is so great you had time away...just the two of you. Some people couldn't believe that it had been 7 years since we had a night away. (For our anniversary this year we stayed away 1 whole night LOL) I guess...we...homeschooling parents just don't always put ourselves "first." Love the pictures by the way.

I know exactly what you mean about life takes over and all of a sudden it is years later.
