Now Ear This!

I know I have given you very little this week. And I want to. I really do. But here's the thing: I have an ear infection that just WON'T clear up. I've been fighting the wretched thing for a week-and-a-half. And it's affecting my ability to do the thinking necessary for writing anything anyone would care to read.

I went back to the doctor yesterday, and after more than a week she said the meds aren't working so changed them all. Add insurance headaches, etc. and well, what a pain in the ear.

I don't do what I'm not supposed to with my ears (no Q-tips, no ear buds, etc.) and I do what I AM supposed to do. So, what gives? I am open to any and all homeopathic, alternative, way-out, only-your-great-Aunt-Matilda-ever-lived-through-this-idea type suggestions as an augmentation to the rot that isn't working. Hit me. Just not in the ear.

  2. Sorry about your ear. I kept getting them a few years ago and found it was my ear buds that was the worst offender. I switched to the dorky old school head phones and haven't had any problems.

And I made up ear drops using vinegar and rubbing alcohol in equal parts.

  4. Oh dear...not a nice thing...I'm sorry I don't have a remedy either!!! When I have an issue with my ears it is my allergies, so once I get them under control my ears are all good!!!

Sorry, I know there really isn't anything funny about an ear infection. Sending well wishes, hugs and love, Sandy

  6. Hoo-boy, wish I knew something to tell you. Alas, I don't. Just hope it's not the kind of infection that adds being dizzy to the list (although most are). Will keep you in my thoughts.

  8. Olive Oil Robynn........olive oil my dear!!
I had a pharmacist give us this remedy for one of our kids when he was younger. He had screaming earache...just awful, one miserable little boy I had on my hands and we were preparing to head off to visit grandparents for several days. We stopped at the pharmacy and talked with the man on duty, told him what was up and he said don't bother with anything on the shelf. Said to lightly warm some pure olive oil...being careful not to get it hot. It's got to be warm but not to warm to put drops into your ear with out burning. Several drops in - letting it settle with your head laying with affected ear facing the ceiling. After a few minutes but some cotton in ear. This really works best before bed time.
Outcome......it loosened the most awful build up in his little ear that came gushing out during the night...even had some blood in it.
Don't know if he actually had an infection or not but we've used this method for years. It's soothing if anything.

  9. Have your ears whacked off. It worked for my Jazzy... and she's a happy little kitty cat this morning!

Just joking. I would go for the olive oil treatment like seedsofnutrition recommended. I used it on all of my kids, (Jake's ears used to almost make me chuck my cookies) and I recommend it to my daycare parents as the FIRST line of treatment nowadays.
    You'll be amazed... I hope!

    *gentle, gentle soothing hugs*

    (my word veri? "verifyin" !!
Robynn, I hope you feel verifyin real soon!

  10. Sounds like you got some good suggestions there. I haven't had any experience along this line so have nothing to offer. Hope you get better soon. Nothing worse than a head ache, tooth ache or ear ache, eh?!

  13. Oh ouchy... earaches are no fun at all. I suffer bazillions of them and because of my job where I use headsets all the time and they are shared headsets... sigh.
All I gotta do is wait 'em out... I have to be careful with what drugs I take.
I hope you find some relief soon.
    Hugs♥

  16. Awww, so sorry to see that your ear isn't feeling well and in turn it's making all of you not feel well! No great suggestions here but an old friend used to say that "two inches of booze in the bottom of a washtub" would cure anything! :)

  17. YOu're gonna love this! We went to Evelyn Webster's house a few weeks ago and she showed us a plant that she says to roll up the leaves and stick them in your ear when you have an ear ache. She swears by it. Dale was behind her rolling his eyes, but what does he know, he's never been a mother! I'll ask her tomorrow what plant it is!! Or I could call her and I bet she'd bring some to church!

  19. Well why didn't you say something when I saw you at the Farmers' Market yesterday ... I could have used my whispering-healing-words-in-your-ear treatment. At least it works for my kids! LOL I tell them to listen carefully and the pain will go away!

The olive oil treatment someone else suggested is good. And I remember something my neighbor used to do when their kids got swimmer's ear ... he would blow smoke in their ear. No kidding! I'm not sure exactly why or how it would work, but they seemed to get relief. So if you've got a spare cigarette layin' around, it's worth a try. Or course you'd have to have someone else smoke it and blow in your ear, unless you're talented enough to do it yourself. LOL

  21. Oh - poor poor you! I think that if your ear is really inflamed, it will take some time to go down...

My Dad uses olive oil - but that's for clearing the ear...

Otherwise, I recommend Hopi Ear Candling.

  23. when I get blocked ears I use the water pick with warm/hot water and it melts all the wax. Its unbelievable sometimes what you have in there and this is why Q tips are not recommended cause you just end up pushing more and more inside.
When my son had a recurring ear infection like this the only cure was Florida.
It dried up the infection that the medicine and cold wet weather in Quebec wouldn't. The doctor wanted to put in tubes but I didn't like the idea because then he would have problems with water.
    Good luck!!
